Hallelujah! With some of our favorite TV shows being axed left and right, we can officially enjoy the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finale next week knowing the series will be back. Major thanks to ABC, you guys made the right decision 😉
Though ABC has not yet released a press release (they’re probably waiting until the upfronts next week), Deadline reports that Season 5 is a go! Sadly the live ratings have never been spectacular, but the creative team impressed critics and fans with the LMD/Framework arc. I’ve mentioned several times in my reviews that this is easily one of S.H.I.E.L.D’s strongest seasons ever.
Regardless of the live numbers, the show does pretty well when it comes to time-shifted viewing. People may not necessarily tune in at 10/9c (which is too damn late in my opinion), but they are definitely watching the show at their own pace via DVR or the ABC App. Deadline is correct when they state, “The series is important to ABC corporate-wise as a platform for launching other parts of the Disney/Marvel franchise.” With Marvel’s Inhumans coming this fall and the fact Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced the powered people, the opportunities for crossovers are faily obvious. Marvel has yet to dazzle fans with a “crossover event” as DC has with its CW shows. Here’s hoping we see the S.H.I.E.L.D. gang interact with the Inhuman Royal family at some point.
Anyway, I realize there are “fans” that believe Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has overstayed it’s welcome on ABC thanks to corporate synergy, but those folks could not be more wrong. Catch the latest season once it hits Netflix in a few weeks, and you will see that the writers really have stepped up their game.
Don’t miss the Season 4 finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this coming Tuesday, May 16 at 10/9c – Show ABC your appreciation by live-tweeting!
