The Dead (and those pesky Saviors) are finally back after The Walking Dead’s unfortunate mandatory two month hiatus.
The show is not known for its official episode descriptions, as they like to keep things “spoiler free.” For Episode 709 “Rock in the Road,” all we get is… “Rick is introduced to a new community.” However, AMC has released several promos so we know King Ezekiel (Khary Payton) returns tonight. Anyone else miss the king as much as I did?
While even the most diehard fans of the show agree that the first half dragged after the Season 7 premiere, tonight’s installment is being touted as a return to form. Will Ezekiel and The Kingdom partner up with Rick and his friends to defeat Negan? Is it possible Tara returns to Oceanside for help? Gregory (Xander Berkeley) has proven himself a coward, but perhaps Jesus takes over and sways Alexandria to take up the fight? Clearly, Rick and his people can’t do it alone. They need strength in numbers. Once the real war begins, how will Negan retaliate? There’s no way he’s going down without a fight.
Though the classic comic book villain’s arc is growing a tad stale, the show’s creators have promised things are going to get seriously intense from here. VFX wiz/Co-Executive producer/Director Greg Nicotero assured fans they have zero intention of toning down the violence. The world of the show is a savage place, and brutality is in its DNA. It would be unfortunate if the creative team backed off the violence. Ratings have slipped because the current storylines need to be beefed up. The show has got to deliver more than the occasional shocking character death.
