As incredible as Captain Flint’s Black Sails journey has been, the promotional videos for Season 4 tout this final year as the “Rise of Silver.”
It’s insane to think John Silver started as a reluctant pirate and outcast. The guy has transformed himself from disliked cook, to Flint’s quartermaster and ultimately the legendary pirate king we know from Treasure Island. That’s not to say Flint’s story is done. Not by a long shot.
I tuned in for the very first episode of Black Sails on January 25, 2014. Though I’ve never really been a fan of pirate movies/shows, this one captivated me. The writing has been consistently brilliant and along with the acting, it helped Starz become a serious player in the original scripted content arena. I mean, Spartacus was great and all, but let’s be honest it was more about the sex and blood than hardcore storytelling. Black Sails managed to strike a nice balance between the two, with Captain Flint serving as our guide through the fearsome world of pirates. I’m not sure another show has so successfully weaved historical events with fictional literary characters. Robert Louis Stevenson, himself, would probably be a fan of Black Sails.
Many of us know the fates of Flint, Silver, Rackham, Billy Bones, Black Beard and others, but will they play out the way we expect in the show’s final season? What becomes of Eleanor and Max, or the other characters we’ve fallen for which were created specifically for this series? No matter how the writers wrap up the character arcs, heartbreak is inevitable. I plan to ride it out until the finale frame. All good things come to an end, right?
Here is Starz’s official Season 4 description…
Hundreds of British soldiers lie dead in a forest… the Royal Navy sails back to England in retreat… the West Indies are now a war zone, and the shores of New Providence Island have never been bloodier. With the help of Eleanor Guthrie, Woodes Rogers transforms Nassau into a fortress without walls, as Captain Flint amasses a fleet of unprecedented strength, hoping to strike the final blow against civilization and reshape the world forever. Meanwhile, from within the island… an insurgency builds, fueled by the legend of its exiled leader, whose name keeps grown men awake at night… the one they call “Long John Silver.”
But as Flint, Silver and their allies are about to learn, the closer civilization comes to defeat, the more desperately and destructively it will fight back. Oaths will be shattered, fortunes will change hands, and amidst the chaos, only one thing remains certain: it has never been more dangerous to call oneself a pirate.
Black Sails returns tonight at 9/8c on Starz. – Look for our season premiere review after the show.
